Nelson Algren
Biography
Nelson Algren (1909-1981) published his first short fiction in Story magazine in 1933. Jean-Paul Sartre translated the French-language edition of Never Come Morning, his second novel, and in 1949 Algren won the first National Book Award for The Man with the Golden Arm. In addition to his fiction and poetry, Algren wrote two travel books, Who Lost an American? and Notes from a Sea Voyage. America Eats is his only cookbook.
