The editor of this volume in a series based on the Hoover Centennial Seminars is Lawrence E. Gelfand, a member of the Department of History at The University of Iowa since 1962. Professor Gelfand, whose special interest is American foreign relations, is the author of The Inquiry: American Preparations for Peace 1917-1919, and coeditor of A Diplomat Looks Back [Memoirs of Lewis Einstein].
